What is PAT Testing and why is it important?

PAT Testing Formally known as Portable Appliance Testing, is the process of inspecting and testing electrical equipment to ensure its safety. PAT Testing is an essential part of health and safety and therefore a priority in the workplace.

In Relation to the ‘ELECTRICITY AT WORK REGULATIONS 1989 which requires that electrical equipment with the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe working order. PAT Testing is the process of testing & inspecting your electrical equipment so that it is fit for purpose and protects everybody from harm. Regular PAT testing helps demonstrate compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other workplace safety laws.

Dismissing or infrequent maintenance on your portable electrical equipment can be more harmful than you may realise and puts people at risk. Click here to see some examples of hazardous equipment our engineers have discovered in use.

What does PAT Testing Involve?

Visual Inspection

Our PAT testers always begin by carefully inspecting electrical appliances for any visible signs of damage, such as faulty plugs, exposed or frayed cables and heat damage. Our skilled engineers are proficient in identifying potential hazards, ensuring that all equipment is visually safe, functional, and compliant with safety standards.

Electrical Inspection

Not all electrical faults are detectable through a visual inspection alone. That’s why we use specialist test equipment to assess internal parameters, including leakage, insulation resistance, earth continuity, and polarity. These precise measurements allow us to identify hidden faults and ensure that your electrical appliances meet the highest safety standards.

Reported Findings

Every item tested is given a clear pass or fail result and labeled accordingly. Additionally, all tested equipment is documented in a detailed yet user-friendly report for your records. Any item that fails our PAT test should be taken out of use immediately to prevent potential hazards and ensure safety.
